Local prep sports roundup | Braden River softball team remains undefeated
Brooke Farrow scored from second on an infield single Thursday to keep the Braden River softball team undefeated with a 3-2 victory against Manatee.
The Pirates (4-0) trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh when pitcher Ali Yawn led off the inning with a single. With two outs, Farrow doubled to center, tying the game. Farrow took off running on contact when Linda Ross bounced a ball to the right side. She beat the throw, and the ball was dropped at first. Farrow, who never slowed, beat the throw to the plate for the winning run.
Farrow finished 3 for 3 and drove in two runs. Yawn, who finished 2 for 3, earned the win, scattering three hits, although one was a two-run homer by Manatee's Peyton Varela in the fourth inning. Bethaney Keen added two hits.
Manatee falls to 2-2.
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 8, LARGO INDIAN ROCKS CHRISTIAN 5 -- Seniors Hannah Leahy and Carley Carbary combined for five hits, and Abby Leahy was 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the offensive attack for the Panthers (2-4). Ariel Marciano was the winning pitcher, fanning seven over seven innings.
Baseball
Out-of-Door Academy 7, Fort Myers 2 -- Parke Phillips two home runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning, to lead the Thunder (3-0). He finished with five RBIs. Naji Rhodes added a double. Cameron Smalley, Saranczek and Trenton Radigan added singles to complete the offense. Nick Saranczek earned the win with three shutout innings.
Booker 3, SAINT STEPHEN'S 2 -- Host Booker scored two unearned runs in the third and one in the fifth to earn the win. The game ended with the tying run in scoring position for Saint Stephen's. Sam O'Dell went 3 for 3 and Mike Madigan went 2 for 4 to lead the Falcons (0-2). Junior Caleb Eyre pitched a seven-hitter, walking four and striking out four.
Boys tennis
Manatee 6, Bradenton Christian 1 -- Jimmy Heagerty, Payne Moore and Tristan Hall swept the top three singles for host Manatee (1-1). Nate Vande Pol and Cade Gilchrest earned Bradenton Christian's point with a win at No. 1 doubles. Manatee returns to action Tuesday at Braden River.
Out-of-Door Academy 7, Lakewood Ranch 0 -- Josh Samuel, Jake Krug and Connor Krug did not lose a game while leading visiting ODA against the Mustangs (1-3).
SAINT STEPHEN'S 6, ST. PETERSBURG Admiral Farragut ACADEMY 1 -- After dropping the No. 1 singles match, the Falcons rallied to take the next four and sweep the doubles contests against the visiting BlueJackets.
Winners in the next four singles matches were Dmitry Spiridonov, Neo Cho, Nicholas Esparza and Rishab Ramamurthy. Cole Sandin and Cho and Spiridonov and Esparza won their double matches.
Girls tennis
Bayshore 7, Palmetto 0 -- Magide Joseph, at No. 4 singles, and Alyssa Jones, at No. 5, led Bayshore (3-0). The No. 1 doubles team of Ava Schultz and Theo Schultz did not lose a game in their pro set.
Manatee 6, Bradenton Christian 1 -- Victories by Grayson Hall, Perri Howard and Gabriel Karatantcheva powered the host Hurricanes (1-1), who return to action against Southeast next Thursday. Alexis Thompson and Melanie Portal, at No. 1 doubles, won the lone point for the Panthers (0-2).
SAINT Stephen's 5, ST. PETERSBURG Admiral Farragut ACADEMY 2 -- The Falcons took four of five singles matches and split the doubles contests en route to a victory over the visiting BlueJackets.
Singles match winners for the Falcons were No. 1-player Annie Brey, Mpho Cho (No. 3), Alysia Serterides (No. 4) and Maryann Placheril (No. 5) in a forfeit. Placheril and Alasa Vacek won their doubles match in a forfeit.
Lakewood Ranch 6, OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 1 -- Gia Cohen beat M'Balia Van Goura, 7-5, 7-5, in a match up between two of the area's top players. The Mustangs' Cohen beat the reigning Class 1A state champion in their first varsity high school match. Natalia Vuckovich and Grace Hagopian added wins for host Lakewood Ranch (4-0). Van Goura and Sydney Sforzo won at No. 1 doubles for ODA (2-2).
