A new shuffleboard organization will be hosting a fun day on Saturday, Feb. 13, to help and honor veterans
A new organization with specific goals is holding its first fundraiser from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdayat the Bradenton Shuffle Club. This is a very special day to honor veterans and their families. Local veterans groups are inviting their members to participate.
A large number of prizes are to be awarded to those present. A $10 donation will qualify anyone present to win prizes, which will be drawn at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Shuffleboard players can play a variety of shuffle events. Professionals will offer lessons to all guests. Everyone is welcome. The sponsoring group is a 501c3 organization hoping to introduce new players to the sport, open the game to youths, veterans, neighborhoods, etc. They hope to assist existing clubs and perhaps begin new ones.
Separate from the Southwest Coast District, which is one-seventh of the Florida Shuffleboard Association, this group is the Southwest Florida Shuffleboard Association Inc. The seven member board includes President David Welsh ((309) 648-7431), Vice-President Mike Marquis, Secretary Dian Darrah, Treasurer Charles Stannard and directors Nelson Kellogg, Ron Nurnberger and John Bryson. Questions may be directed to Welsh. Please join us for a good time, perhaps win a nice door prize, learn to play or help teach.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, three players were inducted into the Southwest Coast District Hall of Fame. Jim Bailey was presented by Mel Erb. Bailey has won most honors in shuffleboard, winning many tournaments at each possible level, including a World Singles Champiolnship in 2011 at Zephyrhills. A member of the Florida Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame with 397 points, a Marine Corps veteran, retired from Kodak in Rochester, N.Y., Bailey has served long and well.
Jerry and Marilyn Everett were also inducted. Former downhill ski instructors in New England, they have partnered together and both have served mightily not only in play but as volunteers, helping out at many tournaments to the present day. Jerry is perhaps the fastest sweeper and beader of courts in the entire world.
Each of them wins tournaments whenever and wherever they go. Both are very popular with partners and admirers.
