Pirates softball routs Venice

Ali Yawn struck out seven and Braden River battered host Venice, 16-6, in a girls softball game shortened to six innings by the mercy rule on Wednesday.

Myah Moy led Braden River (2-0), going 5 for 5 with a home run, a double and six RBIs.

Bethaney Keen and Zaire Yancy also homered. Keen collected two hits.

MANATEE 12, SOUTHEAST 0 (F/5) -- Kelli Gault hurled five two-hit innings for the Hurricanes (1-0) in their season-opener.

Alyssa Blastic and Kara Saylor provided the bulk of offense. Blastic went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Saylor went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

Madison Bradford added two hits.

Ivy Turner went 2 for 2 to lead Southeast (0-1). Southeast plays host to St. Stephen's on Friday at 6 p.m.

Wrestling

PALM HARBOR UNIVERSITY 33, MANATEE 32 -- The Hurricanes' attempt to stage an outdoor meet against Palm Harbor at Hawkins Stadium was stymied when conditions made the mats too wet. After moving indoors, Palm Harbor held on for the win.

Girls tennis

Lakewood Ranch 7, Palmetto 0 -- Deven Franklin earned her first varsity win, Rachel Towe won in her first varsity match this season and Natalia Vuckovic won at No. 1 singles to lead the hosts (2-0). Both Lakewood Ranch teams return to action Wednesday at home against Braden River.

Boys tennis

LAKEWOOD RANCH 6, PALMETTO 1 -- Philip Pugh, Anthony Pistella and Wesley Moyer earned victories to lead the hosts (1-1). The No. 2 doubles team of Ollie Leclezio and Connor Vierling produced the lone point for Palmetto (0-1).

Junior college basketball

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 79, HILLSBOROUGH CC 71 -- In Bradenton, Joshua Floyd scored 25 points for SCF, and the Manatees (11-15) won their second straight game. Four SCF players scored in double figures: Reshard Brown (17), Khalil Ozuna (12) and Rahim Williams (10) .

Junior college baseball

INDIAN RIVER STATE COLLEGE 7, STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 4 -- Ryan Miller belted a home run for SCF, but the Manatees (3-2) stumbled in Fort Pierce. Keshawn Lynch added an RBI and a pair of stolen bases in the loss.
