Prep sports roundup | Falcons battle fierce soccer foes in tourney
The Saint Stephen's Falcons boys soccer team faced two state powerhouses over the weekend during the annual Calvary Christian Invitational Tournament hosted in Clearwater.
On Friday, the Falcons took on Class 4A's Wiregrass of Wesley Chapel, falling 4-0.
On Saturday, Saint Stephen's (7-2-3) faced Sunlake of Land O' Lakes, an undefeated Class 3A team, and battled to a scoreless draw, handing the Seahawks their only shutout of the season.
JV boys basketball
PALMETTO 53, LAKEWOOD RANCH 52 -- Southeast hosted the county tournament Saturday and the Tigers' win against the Mustangs in the final gave them the Manatee County title.
Palmetto's Adolphus Lewis was named MVP of the tournament and joined by Ade Adeoba and Isaiah Washington on the all-tournament team. Ranch's Johnny Reid and Quino York were also all-tournament selections.
Each of the six teams represented at Benjamin "Buzz" Narbut Gymnasium placed a pair of players on the all-tournament team. Elijah Garrett and Brian Keane were Braden River's choices; Leo Rose and Malcolm Clearmont earned the honor for Manatee; Kamron Green and Adarrius Savage were the Seminoles' selections; and Jaylan Vaughn and Corey Bonborstel rounded out the team for Bayshore.
Boys basketball
BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 76, ST. PETERSBRUG KESWICK CHRISTIAN 34 -- Ryan Leunk scored 29 points, Justin Aracena added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Panthers (15-2, 5-0 Class 2A, District 11) pummeled the visiting Crusaders.
On Monday, the Panthers take on the host Braden River Pirates.
Girls basketball
ST. PETERSBRUG KESWICK CHRISTIAN 58, BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 53 -- The host Panthers dropped a district contest to the visiting Crusaders (11-9, 4-0 Class 2A, District 11) and Emily Gregson, who tallied 23 points.
Kali Gelston and Jessica Jackson led the Panthers (9-4, 2-2) with 10 points apiece.
Bradenton Christian travels Monday to face Cardinal Mooney.
