Local prep sports roundup | Southeast girls basketball team wins seventh in row
The Southeast High girls basketball team continued its winning ways with a 56-31 victory Friday over the Tarpon Springs Sponges in a district game on Friday night.
This was their seventh straight win, raising their record to 7-1 district and 16-3 overall.
The Seminoles' Tay Green and Yanna Reed tallied 13 points each, and Marline Valcin and Johnelle Clark each contributed eight points. Valcin also grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Noles' next game is Wednesday at St. Petersburg Gibbs.
SAINT STEPHEN'S 57, ST. PETERSBURG ADMIRAL FARRAGUT 31 -- Lenae Jones scored 14 points, and the Falcons breezed to a win against Admiral Farragut in Bradenton. Jones also chipped in four assists and a pair of rebounds for SSES (4-7, 1-2 Class 3A-District 8), which received contributions from seventh-graders Allie Seretides and Sophie Preston to beat the Blue Jackets (1-9, 0-4).
Saint Stephen's next travels to St. Petersburg for another district clash with Shorecrest Prep on Wednesday.
Boys basketball
LAKEWOOD RANCH 87, SARASOTA 52 -- Five players scored in double figures, and the Mustangs blew out the Sailors at home to remain perfect in district play.
Sophomore wing Evan Spiller led Ranch (13-4, 5-0 Class 7A-District 11) with 15 points, forward Jack Kelley scored 14, guards Blauvelt Georges and Brock Sisson each added 13, and guard Sam Hester rounded out Lakewood Ranch's double-digit scorers with 11. Forward Justin Muscara also gave the Sailors (5-11, 0-5) trouble with eight points and seven rebounds.
The Mustangs return to the court Tuesday with another district game in Venice.
BAYSHORE 63, TARPON SPRINGS 61 (2OT) -- Jerry Lorrevil sunk a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining, and the Bruins pulled off a thrilling win against the Spongers in Tarpon Springs.
Lorrevil finished with only five points for BHS (10-9, 4-5 Class 5A-District 11) after Miguel Rodriguez and Vernard Brown II helped carry Bayshore through regulation and two overtimes. Rodriguez led the Bruins with 17 points and Brown snared a game-high 11 rebounds. Bonna Baker also chipped in 14 points to beat the Spongers (8-10, 3-4).
BHS gets a brief reprieve from district play after three straight league games when it hosts Arcadia DeSoto County on Monday.
SAINT STEPHEN'S 59, ST. PETERSBURG NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN 55 -- A double-double by center Nick Runde helped the Falcons edge the Crusaders for a district win in Bradenton.
Runde scored 10 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for SSES (4-10, 2-4 Class 3A-District 8), which had four players score in double figures. Guards Jordon Murrell and Travis Tobe each scored 12 to lead Saint Stephen's, and guard Jordan Edwards added 11. Forward Destin Falls also grabbed 12 rebounds and scored nine points to beat the Mustangs (4-10, 1-5).
The Falcons play their third game in three days Saturday when they travel to St. Petersburg to face Admiral Farragut.
Wrestling
COACH KELLY MEMORIAL HURRICANE TEAM CHALLENGE -- Manatee swept through the first day of its tournament in Bradenton with wins against Naples Gulf Coast, Plant City Durant and Sarasota Military Academy.
The Canes topped Gulf Coast, 43-31, beat Durant, 52-21, and handled Sarasota Military for a 54-30 win.
The Hurricane Team Challenge continues Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with five more matches for Manatee.
The championship pool also includes the Sharks, Sarasota, Palm Coast Flagler, Brandon and Kissimmee Gateway.
SEBRING MEMORIAL TOURANAMENT -- The Lakewood Ranch Mustangs are in sixth place out of 32 teams with seven wrestlers headed to the quarterfinals Saturday after winning both matches in Friday's action.
Undefeated Mustangs in the two-day event are Hunter Reed (120 pounds), Dylan Cameron (132), Timmy Dwyer (138), Ryan Brown (145), Luis Tremblay-Vival (170), Chase Sharp (195) and Nate Lancaster (220).
Jake Seaman (106) and Logan Bounds (182) went 1-1 and qualified for Saturday's wrestle-back consolation bracket.
