Prep football: Huesman, James, Null honored by FACA
Three Manatee County football players have one game left in their high school careers.
Braden River quarterback Jacob Huesman, Palmetto running back Octavious James and Manatee kicker Nick Null were selected on Wednesday to participate in the 61st annual Florida Athletic Coaches Association North/South All-Star football game scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. at The Villages High School.
However, that game won't feature Huesman. The senior signal-caller led the Pirates on the brink of a Class 7A championship game, before Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas pinned a 27-10 loss on Braden River. Huesman confirmed to the Herald on Wednesday that he won't play in the game.
The Villages High School is located about two hours northeast of Manatee County near Ocala.
IMG Academy to play in Honor Bowl next season
Fresh off the program's first unbeaten regular season, IMG Academy is already set to take on its first California opponent in history when the Ascenders square off with Corona (Calif.) Centennial in the annual Honor Bowl.
The game takes place over the Labor Day holiday weekend in Southern California. As of Wednesday, both programs are ranked in the top 10 of USA Today's Super 25 national poll. The Ascenders are No. 4, while Corona is No. 6 in the latest rankings. Their game is one of four in the 2016 Honor Bowl, with those other matchups announced at a later date.
