Out-of-Door Academy closes football season with huge win over Canterbury
On senior night, it was a freshman that led Out-of-Door Academy to a win, showing that the future is bright with him at the helm.
Anthony Squitieri finished with 219 yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions as the Thunder cruised past Canterbury, 39-14, sending the seniors out with a bang.
"It meant everything to me to send those guys out the right way," Squitieri said. "The seniors have taught me so much. Without them, I wouldn't be here."
Squitieri only started five games this season after Gus Mahler went down due to injury, but he finished with over 1,000 yards passing and grew into a team leader.
"He's been great from the start," Thunder head coach Ken Sommers said. "Anthony takes what the defense gives him. He doesn't have a favorite receiver."
The ODA (3-7) defense clamped down on the Cougars in the first half, holding them to 85 total yards and helping the offense build a large lead.
Jalen Ellis led Canterbury with 118 yards rushing on 25 carries and one touchdown, doing everything he could to keep his guys in the game.
"They are a good football team over there, those guys play hard." Cougars head coach Stacy Sizemore said. "Our guys are young. We have to learn how to execute and get better."
Sizemore, in his first year as head coach, took over a team that was (1-6) last season and lead them to a 6-3 mark, a dramatic turnaround.
"It's something to build off of for sure. Our young guys see that and I'm excited about next season." Sizemore said.
Owen Han, who lead the Thunder in receiving yards and receptions this season, finished his last home game with 139 yards on six catches, while Dakota Dickerson chipped in 68 rushing yards.
"This was a great team win," Han said. "We've had a tough season so to go out like that was pretty special. I'm not sure if I will continue to play after this season, so to finish my high school career on that note was great."
