Evidence pointing to self-defense in fatal shooting of Bradenton man outside strip club

MANATEE -- Evidence in the investigation of a Bradenton man who was shot to death outside a strip club in Palmetto early Monday is pointing to self-defense by the shooter, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Dominic Orr, 27, was found with multiple gunshot wounds when deputies arrived at 2:50 a.m. Monday to the Atlantis Gentlemen's Club at 3800 U.S. 41 N. in Palmetto. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspected shooter, Durrell Jones, 21, was seen running from the scene heading east on 39th Street East and had possibly getting into a waiting vehicle.

After releasing a photo of Jones and receiving some information about his whereabouts, detectives were able to locate him, according to sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow. Jones has given detectives a statement about what happened and is cooperating with the investigation.

Video footage obtained by the Manatee County Homicide Investigative Unit from the club's surveillance system shows the two men arguing and the shooting that ensued.

"Right now the evidence is pointing to it was self-defense," Bristow said Tuesday morning. "We have a good account of what happen."

The sheriff's office will be consulting with the State Attorney's Office before making a decision on whether to file charges.

The video shows Orr attempting to fire the first shot, but his gun never went off, Bristow said.

Two of the club's security guards also fired their weapons, according to investigators. All four handguns known to be involved have been collected as evidence in the case.

"We haven't ruled out somebody else being involved," Bristow said.

It is unclear whether the two men had a history of conflict.
