Veteran's car tag leads to 'thanks for your service' payment on donuts

My Dad, Dick Krempasky, a Vietnam veteran, has a sweet tooth. He is a regular early-morning visitor to Dunkin Donuts on Cortez Road, picking up his six Boston Cream doughnuts every other day.

On Friday, my Dad noticed a man looking him over a couple of times, but thought nothing of it until he got to the window and was told the man in the car had paid his bill.

The Dunkin employee told him the man recognized his veteran's tag and wanted to say "Thanks for your service."

What most don't know is not only did he serve his country as a Marine, he has continued to serve his fellow veterans as a member of the American Legion, and now the VFW Honor Guard, performing Honor Guard burial services throughout Bradenton and Sarasota for more years than I can count.

He is a member of the Manatee County Veterans Counsel, and you can find his name on the monument at Veterans Park as Veteran of the Year.

So "thank you, sir" for honoring my Dad. He deserves it.
