Community sports | Manatee Mustangs claim pair of Pop Warner conference championships

Manatee County teams competed in all seven of the Pop Warner Little Scholars Foundation for Youth Development conference championship football games Saturday and the Manatee Mustangs will send a pair of teams to the Division 2 regional playoffs Nov. 14.

The junior pee wee Mustangs started the day strong, blowing out the South Shore Jr. Longhorns 25-0 in the first game of the day at FishHawk Sports Complex in Lithia. Manatee's pee wee team took the field next and edged the FishHawk Wolfpack, 18-6.

The junior pee wee Mustangs will play either the Gwen Cherry Bulls or Palmetto Raiders and the pee wee team will play either the Bulls or Liberty City Warriors. The Greater Miami South Florida conference will hold its championships Saturday.

The Palmetto Trojans also fielded a pair of teams at the Division 2 conference championships, but both were toppled by the Silver Raiders. The junior midget Trojans fell 26-0

and Palmetto's unlimited team lost 39-7.

In the Division 3 championships at Buffalo Creek Park, the Hardee Wildcats blew out the East Manatee Bulldogs 44-12 in junior pee wee, the Wesley Chapel Cowboys breezed to a 30-6 win against the pee wee Bulldogs and the Carrollwood Hurricanes topped the North Manatee Storm 12-0 in unlimited play.

U-15 national soccer team comes to IMG Academy

Sixty players, including three IMG Academy students, will be in Bradenton for the next week for the United States U-15 boys' national team training camp. The team will play three games on Nov. 3, 5 and 7 before the team leaves Nov. 9. This is the final camp for this age group before players move into the U-17 residency program, which is run out of IMG.

The three Ascenders with the team are defender Ethan Sawdon, midfielder Ben Lederman and striker Tonny Temple.
