FHP wolfpack detail to cover Manatee, Sarasota

BRADENTON -- The Florida Highway Patrol, North District, will conduct a DUI wolfpack detail from 11 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

The detail will remove impaired drivers from the roadways. Troopers conducting the detail will be mobile in an effort to maximize their visibility and effectiveness in removing impaired drivers from the roadways in Manatee, Sarasota, Desoto, Hardee and Highlands counties.

Islam expert set for Nov. 12 E. Manatee GOP meeting

MANATEE -- The East Manatee Republican Club will meet at the Peridia Golf and Country Club at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

Guest speaker Dr. Rich Swier will discuss Islam in depth.

USFSM's Hannah Veitkus admitted to Golden Brahman

SARASOTA -- University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, senior Hannah Veitkus knew little about the 3-year-old Order of the Golden Brahman when the booster organization approached her about joining.

"It's a very prestigious organization," said Veitkus, 20, the order's first member from USF Sarasota-Manatee.

Veitkus officially joined the Golden Brahmans at a Nov. 21 reception at the Julian Hawthorne Lifsey House, USF's presidential home.

USF grad Dr. Anila Jain, this year's co-chairwoman of USFSM's Brunch on the Bay, plus two other alumni and 18 students, also joined.

Veitkus has been president of USFSM's student ambassadors the past two years and works as a teacher's aide at the Julie Rohr Academy Elementary School in Sarasota.

She also mentors a girl at Booker High School in Sarasota under Florida's Take Stock in Children program and volunteered during the 2012 Olympics in London, where she attended high school. Veitkus is part of USFSM's first freshman class.

Aging in Paradise Resource Center schedules scam talk

LONGBOAT KEY -- The Aging in Paradise Resource Center, 6200 Gulf of Mexico Drive, has scheduled a free workshop on how to "Protect Yourself Against Frauds and Scams" from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, which includes a light lunch.

Michael Jones, owner of Comfort Keepers, a home health care service provider, will cover the latest frauds and scams.

Co-facilitator Dave Norris of Fifth Third Bank, Anna Maria Island, will share ways to spot bank frauds and scams.
