State golf | Saint Stephen's top players in hunt after first round

Saint Stephen's best boys golfer and best girls golfer didn't have trouble at Mission Inn, site of the Class 1A state tournament, on Tuesday.

Their teams, though, were left further back in the pack.

Falcons senior Justin Wynen fired a 1-under par 71 on the El Campeon course in Howey-in-the-Hills to grab second place following Tuesday's first round.

Lake Mary Prep's Thomas Allkins leads by one shot.

Saint Stephen's is in ninth place in the team standings after a 324 total. In addition to Wynen, the team featured David Hu (80), Qi Ming Wong (85), Eric Meng (88) and Adam Vilimosky (98).

The girls tournament, contested on the Las Colinas course, saw Saint Stephen's log a 343. That puts the Falcons in 11th place. Vanessa Yan, a junior, peeled off an even-par 72 to tie for seventh place after the first round.

Rounding out the Saint Stephen's girls were: Maria Huang (88), Michelle Yan (91), Kendall Miller (92) and Catherine Huang (109).

Windermere Prep's Gabriela Coello leads the individual portion of the tournament with a 67. Lake Mary Prep, with a combined 4-under par 284, leads the girls team leaderboard.

Lake Mary Prep also leads the boys division with a 301.

The final round takes place Wednesday.
