Community sports | Bradenton Motorsports Park hosts biggest event since rainy summer
The largest Outlaw Drag Racing event of the year is coming to Bradenton Motorsports Park from Friday through Sunday.
The Outlaw Drag Racing Championship, which features 10 different classifications including dragsters and bikes, kicks off Friday at 3 p.m. with gates opening to the public at 8 a.m. for tech sessions in an open pit area, which begin at 10 a.m. Qualifying races begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday and run through the day before elimination rounds get underway at 9 a.m. on Friday, beginning with juniors and bikes.
The races take place on eighth-mile tracks with first-place purses of up to $5,000.
The event will be Bradenton Motorsports Park's biggest since the PDRA Racing Series event was rained out earlier this month.
Pop Warner victors
The Palmetto Trojans met the Manatee Wildcats for a series of intracounty Pop Warner Little Scholars football games at Palmetto Youth Center this weekend and the Trojans took 4-of-5 from the rival Wildcats.
Palmetto claimed victories in mighty mites, junior pee wee, junior midget and unlimited, where the Trojans won 21-0. Manatee's one win, however, was a 52-0 blowout of Palmetto's pee wee team.
The North Manatee Storm also met the East Manatee Bulldogs at Buffalo Creek Park in Palmetto for another all-county clash. The Bulldogs came out on top in this one, taking 3-of-4. East Manatee won in the mighty mites and pee wee divisions, and blew out the Storm 40-7 in junior pee wee. North Manatee's victory was a 40-0 in the junior midget division.
Most of the Manatee Mustangs' teams were in Lithia for a series of games against the Fishhawk Wolfpack. The Mustangs swept their three games against the Wolpack at Fishhawk Sports Complex in mighty mites, junior pee wee and pee wee. Manatee also beat the South Shore Jr. Longhorns as part of a mighty mites doubleheader and beat the Tampa PAL Patriots 36-6 in an unlimited division game at Tampa PAL Field.
