Kevin Nealon performs in St. Petersburg

It hasn't been that long since Kevin Nealon did his stand-up comedy act in the Bradenton area. He played McCurdy's Comedy Theatre earlier this year.

People who saw the show will see pretty much all new material from Nealon on Saturday at the Palladium in St. Petersburg.

"I'm always changing my act," Nealon said in a phone interview from his home in Los Angeles. "I'm always adding new material. There might be something that people recognize from the McCurdy's show, though. It's like buying furniture. You don't get rid of all the old stuff just because you bought something new."

To the public, Nealon is probably best known as a sketch comedian on "Saturday Night Live" and comic actor on "Weeds." If you ask him, he's a stand-up comedian who did some sketch work and acting as a sideline.

"It's really my forte," he said. "It's my passion. I love the craft of stand-up comedy."

"SNL" usually recruits its cast members from sketch comedy and improve groups. Nealon came along at a time when the cast was exceptionally heavy on stand-up comics. Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Victoria Jackson and were all on the show with him. The cast was much smaller then, he said, so almost half were stand-up comedians.

Nealon was hired as a writer and occasional performer on "SNL" and became one of the most popular cast members during his nine-year run in the 1980s and '90s.

Still, he considers himself a stand-up comedian.

When he moved to California he decided to take acting classes. Eventually he was offered a one-time role on the pilot episode of "Weeds." His character became central to the series for all eight seasons.

He has some other projects -- he's crowd-funding a movie he wrote called "The Pleaser" -- but stand-up remains his focus.
