PALMETTO -- What was first thought to be a sinkhole that opened up on 8th Avenue West in Palmetto, closing one lane in each direction and creating a minor headache for motorists, is actually a failing sewer line, according to Palmetto Public Works deputy director Javier Vargas.

At Large Commissioner Tamara Cornwell aptly dubbed the issue "stinkhole" at Monday's commission meeting where Vargas said emergency repairs were ongoing and "should be completed soon." The city could have the sewer line break under control by Tuesday, Vargas indicated.

Palmetto Police Department posted at 9:45 a.m. Monday that a small sinkhole had opened, closing the inside lanes of 8th Avenue West between 11th Street West and 13th Street West.
