2020 Democrat Bloomberg continues Florida campaign expansion with new Sarasota office

Democrat presidential candidate and former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg is continuing to build a strong presence in Florida with the launch of a Sarasota campaign office on Saturday.

A kickoff celebration will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday at 325 Central Ave. in downtown Sarasota. The office expansion comes before Bloomberg has set foot on a debate stage in the 2020 election cycle, but Florida State Director Scott Kosanovich says the move will help build the campaign’s momentum in engaging with primary voters face-to-face.

“The entire point of this primary comes down to delegates across the state, and we’re planning on running an aggressive campaign from the Panhandle down to the Keys,” Kosanovich said.

That includes the launch of several offices from Tampa to West Palm Beach to Tallahassee this weekend. Each will serve as regional hub for supporters to learn more about Bloomberg’s policy positions, volunteer and participate in campaign activities.

Campaign directors say these offices aren’t an effort to earn campaign contributions. So far, Bloomberg, a billionaire who turns 78 on Friday, has self-funded his campaign to become the nation’s 46th president with $200 million in contributions, according to the latest campaign finance filings with the Federal Election Commission.

“We don’t take any donations whatsoever. The only person we answer to is the American people,” Kosanovich explained. That’s a position that a lot of our voters really appreciate. We’re one of the only candidates not beholden to anybody, at the end of the day.”

The Bloomberg campaign has been targeting Florida since the beginning of the year and is one of the only Democrat candidate operations with a sizable footprint in the state. Because many voters have already received their mail ballots ahead of the March 17 primary election, now is the best time to engage with them, according to Kosanovich.

“It’s a crucial time in the state to have an organization on the ground to talk to voters and get our message out,” he said.
