A famous Canadian coffee chain could be coming to Manatee County.

Preliminary paperwork was filed recently with the county’s planning services portal to bring Tim Hortons to Ellenton. It would become the first Tim Horton’s in the area.

According to records, the proposal is to build a 1,700-square-foot Tim Hortons at 3315 U.S. 301 N., across the street from the Acapulco Tropical y Mas plaza.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tim Horton, who died in a car crash at age 44, opened the coffee chain that bears his namesake in 1964 with business partner Jim Charade in Hamilton, Ontario, according to The Canadian Encyclopedia.

Tim Hortons’ menu specializes in coffee and donuts, including donut holes called Timbits. The restaurant also serves sandwiches. Tim Hortons had locations in Florida during the 1980s, but they closed in the early 1990s, the Miami Herald previously reported.

While a Canadian staple, the chain has locations in 15 states, reaching as far as south as Georgia and Texas. 3G Capital, under its Restaurant Brands International name, has owned Tim Hortons since 2014. The parent company also owns Popeyes, Burger King and Firehouse Subs.
