New Mexican restaurant in Bradenton made from scratch dishes ‘based on Mom’s recipes’

Happy diners rewarded Avocado’s Cocina Mexicana & Bar last week with brisk business after a long wait for the opening of Bradenton’s newest restaurant.

Avocado’s, at 6510 Cortez Road W., opened last Monday and might have opened a year earlier, except for the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, said owner Ramiro Ramirez.

Ramirez, 38, extensively remodeled restaurant space, previously occupied by Hurricane Grill & Wings and LeRoy Selmon’s, to bring something new to the street.

A restaurant veteran who started in the business washing dishes, serving and cooking, he is also part owner of Habanero’s Mexican Grill and Bar, 5120 Manatee Ave. W.

“We try to introduce authentic Mexican cuisine. Everything is made from scratch based on Mom’s recipes. We try to make people happy,” Ramirez said.

The homemade entrees are prepared as mild or as spicy as the diner likes, and the restaurant also offers a full-service bar and beverage service.

Why the name Avocado’s? It’s the main ingredient in guacamole, a dip or spread that originated in Mexico.

“Mexican food is always popular. The restaurant will add to the area. We are happy to be open,” said Glay Nimlin, Ramirez’s wife.

Main courses (platos principales) at Avocado’s start at about $13.

They include fajitas, chile verde (pork cubes marinated in Avocado’s special green sauce, served with rice, beans and tortillas), pollo borracho (grilled chicken breast topped with melted cheese, grilled onions, tomatoes and bell peppers, served with rice, beans and pico de gallo), chimichangas, carne asada (New York steak) and steak Mexicana.

That’s not all of the main courses, but also worth noting is the chicken and shrimp entree.

The menu includes variety of burritos, tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas. Also offered are classic combination plates (choose any two selections for $12.49 or any three for $14.99).

Rounding out the menu are appetizers, soups and salads and a children’s menu.

Avocado’s is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
