New bakery offers Bradenton a taste of Europe. Its name and location are familiar
There is a new European bakery and coffee house in town at 1822 59th St W., but it has a familiar look and feel.
Tracy and Pavel Hasenohrl recently open Cremesh Coffee and Bakery there.
Astrid Klotz frequently goes to Cremesh for a coffee and pastry, and was a patron of the previous tenant, Land of a Thousand Hills cafe, a nonprofit whose motto was “Drink coffee. Do good in Rwanda.”
Klotz is happy that her favorite coffee spot is continuing under new owners, with a new name and a new menu.
“I know this place, I was here often before. It’s kind of familiar for us. We need a little European bakery in town,” Klotz said.
Pavel is up early, six days a week, baking made-from-scratch breads, muffins, pies, brownies, scones and more. Customers can also get a breakfast sandwich or, at lunch, a sandwich, salad or soup.
Chicken salad sandwiches have been an early favorite at Cremesh, Tracy said.
“This is a European bakery and it is totally different,” she said. “We are trying to carve out our own niche to provide something that you don’t find anywhere else.”
Land of a Thousand Hills, which opened in 2016, closed in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving the space vacant. The Hasenohrls, who also own Cremesh European Restaurant, 7232 Manatee Ave. W., were looking to open a bakery to strengthen their bottom line.
The pandemic has been tough on all restaurants. When then the Hasenohrls learned the bakery location was available, they leaped at the opportunity.
“It was a dream too good to be true. It just dropped into our laps, really,” Tracy said.
Business has been steady, and the fresh baked goods sell out every day, she said.
Pavel has been baking about 35 years, and some of the customer favorites at the bakery are the strudels, the cremesh, and the kolach.
After so many years cooking, he defers when asked about his personal favorites.
“The best is when someone else is cooking for me. I eat everything,” he said.
Pavel’s homeland is the Czech Republic. He has been living and working in the United States for 21 years, including in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Key West, Pompano Beach and Bradenton.
It was while working as a chef at Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee that Pavel and Tracy, a native of England met. She was doing marketing for the nonprofit at the time. Tracy is no stranger to the hospitality industry. She grew up in an English pub and has been active in the food business for two decades.
Cremesh touts its coffees and teas, and the quality of its baked artisan breads, pastries, and custom cakes, using non-GMO, un-bleached, and preservative-free ingredients.
Cremesh Coffee and Bakery is open 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. Saturday. The bakery is closed on Sunday.
