‘Best weekend ever to nothing.’ Some Bradenton restaurants reopening, others stress caution
Shortly after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis laid out his plan Wednesday for reopening Florida in phases, with restaurants operating at a 25 percent capacity for indoor dining, Ellenton’s Whiskey Joe’s Bar & Grill received roughly 30 phone calls from community members looking for reservations starting Monday.
But one of Manatee County’s newest and highly-anticipated restaurants, located along the Manatee River, is erring on the side of caution as the global COVID-19 pandemic continues.
“There’s no way we’ll open on Monday,” said Whiskey Joe’s brand manager Marty Duffany. “The profits are not the worth the risk of making sure that are employees are trained correctly, and that are guests feel safe.”
Hand sanitizer stations located throughout the restaurant, in addition to wrapped silverware and paper menus, are some of the precautionary measures Whiskey Joe’s is planning for whenever they decide to reopen.
“We have to retrain the way, not only our back of the house, but our front of the house services a guest,” Duffany said. “There needs to be social distancing from the table as they’re taking the order. The way we drop off drinks and food is going to change.”
Not rushing
Duffany said they’re not in a rush to open.
Neither are the Chiles Group restaurants.
“It’s about keeping our people safe and our guests safe, and it’s just so critical that we don’t open up and close,” owner Ed Chiles said. “That’s what really concerns me.”
Chiles has two restaurants — Anna Maria’s Sandbar and Mar Vista on Longboat Key — offering a takeout menu, grocery list and once a week organic produce box from the Gamble Creek farm. The Beach House is closed.
Chiles said they are not intending to do anything quickly.
“I want to be driven by the health of our guests and our staff, and the science,” Chiles said. “There’s every kind of opinion. … The science, we’ve got great scientists and we’re going to be driven by the science in this.”
Restaurants opening Monday
Meanwhile, other restaurants are planning to open their dining rooms Monday, the first day they can under DeSantis’ executive order. The order allows outdoors dining, with six feet of social distance, and indoor dining at 25 percent of capacity.
The Sage Biscuit Cafe, which serves breakfast and lunch, plans to open both their downtown and Cortez Road locations.
Ryan Massey, who is the manager of the downtown location, said they’ll move some extra tables outside to the front of the restaurant in order to meet the capacity requirements set by DeSantis.
“Just for the simple reason that we are taking the precautions that we are spacing out our tables properly,” said Massey, who estimates they’ll be using about 60 percent of their usual staff.
Massey said the restaurant’s hours will start off at an amended 7 a.m.-2 p.m.
Tough times
The financial stress from COVID-19 made a big impact on Rockin’ Gelato, an music-themed ice cream shop that’s been around for 1 ½ years.
The store, located 6646 Cortez Road W., suffered a double whammy with COVID-19 and the nearby Anna Maria Oyster Bar closing and going under a renovation, co-owner Kathy Yeomans said.
“We literally had gone from our best weekend ever to nothing,” said Yeomans, who estimated a 95 percent decrease in revenue following the stay home order DeSantis issued in late March. “That was mind blowing.”
Yeomans started a GoFundMe as an effort to keep the fledgling business going during the current crisis, and she’s raised $450 of the $10,000 goal.
“That maybe pays the electric bill,” Yeomans said.
With revenues dipping due to the coronavirus and loss of a customer base that would swing over following dinner at AMOB, the announcement from DeSantis on Wednesday brings a glimmer of hope.
Yeomans said they’ll open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, while aiming at some weeknights and doing a full weekend.
