Free screening of "Lone Survivor" for veterans: Regal Hollywood 20, 1993 Main St., Sarasota
The Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the Air Force Association will present a free showing of the movie "Lone Survivor," April 9. Based on a true story, "Lone Survivor" tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated mission to neutralize a high-level Taliban operative in Afghanistan. It stars Mark Wahlberg. Doors open at 9:30 a.m., the program will begin shortly thereafter. A post movie presentation from a senior Air Force Special Operations officer is programmed. Keeton's Office and Art Supply Annual "Can Jam": 817 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton
Keeton's Office and Art Supply will host its third annual Can Jam, a graffiti art battle, 3-6 p.m. April 9. Three walls of Keeton's warehouse are currently covered with a "Star Wars"-themed mural and the plan is to cover the mural with a fresh coat of white paint by the end of this month to give a blank canvas for the community to spray paint. The public can win hourly giveaways, stencil their own T-shirt, jam to some music tunes, and munch on delicious local food. There will be a Kid Zone. Spray paint will be available for purchase. Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant proclaimed April 16 First Responders Day and invites the public to a celebration kicking off with a ceremony at 1 p.m. April 16. Free activities will continue until 4 p.m. and include a kids' Firefighter Challenge, a new museum exhibit about the history of local police and firefighters and information booths about Emergency Medicine, Crime Prevention, Identity theft, Personal Safety. The Grand Parade, an illuminated night parade with more than 150 entries will proceed west on Ninth Avenue, north along 39th Street West to Manatee Avenue and then east toward downtown. The Downtown Sarasota First Friday Art Walk will be 6-9 p.m. May 6, featuring businesses, shops and eateries, decorated to welcome the holidays, and will stay open late as live music fills the streets. Attendees can shop, stroll and celebrate as they stroll through the businesses and along the downtown sidewalks enjoying dancing, refreshments and special offers. Proceeds will benefit Selby Gardens.
