Kids rule at DeSoto parade in Palmetto

It's not just a parade for children, it's a parade by children.

Among the highlights of the DeSoto Heritage Festival Children's Parade every year are floats engineered and built in Manatee County school rooms and at home with wholesome themes and bright colors.

On Friday morning, those floats will head out for the popular annual parade along the historic avenues of Palmetto. They'll start at the Manatee County Fairgrounds, head south on 10th Avenue West and then along Fifth Street West to Lamb Park.

The parade itself is just the centerpiece of hours of festivities. After the parade, Sutton Park and Lamb Park will be packed with activities for children, including games and a magic show.

It's all about the fun and games, but there's some pride and prestige at stake too, and even some cash. The parade will feature awards for Best Performance and Best Cheerleading Performance and a non-float School Spirit cash award. There will also be a $1,000 award to the participating school who's float entry best represents this year's theme.

Details: 10 a.m-2 p.m. April 3, beginning at Manatee County Fairgrounds, 1402 14th Ave W., Palmetto. Tickets: Free. Information: (941) 747-1998 or desotohq.com.
