Artist Concert Series of Sarasota presents a program of Rodgers and Hammerstein classics
It's been nearly 60 years since their last show, but Rodgers and Hammerstein are still widely regarded as the greatest writing team in Broadway history.
This weekend at the Historic Asolo Theater, Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota presents a celebration of the duo's music.
The concert's titled "My Favorite Things," and it features Sarasota's Gloria Musicae singers with four guest soloists: soprano Mara Bonde, mezzo soprano Katherine Pracht, tenor Aaron Blake and baritone Marcus DeLoach. Joseph Holt conducts.
All four soloists have strong national reputations. Bonde has sung with the Boston Pops in a nationally televised concert, Pracht made her Carnegie Hall debut as the alto soloist in Verdi's "Requiem" in 2013, Blake was called "a vocal powerhouse" by the Los Angeles Times for his performance as Don Ottavio in "Don Giovanni" and DeLoach has serious classical music credits and also toured with Trans-Siberian Orchestra for their 2004 rock opera "Christmas Eve and Other Stories."
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, of course, are responsible for such classic shows as "Oklahoma!" "Carousel," "South Pacific," "The King and I" and "The Sound of Music" that helped define the 20th-century American musical.
