The coal miner's daughter performs in St. Petersburg
She's one the biggest music stars America has ever produced in any genre, and she's still performing regularly at age 83.
On Sunday, Loretta Lynn, the virtually undisputed Queen of Country Music, will be at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, performing songs from a career that spans nearly 60 years.
Although her music always has been firmly rooted in country, Lynn has attracted a huge following among people who don't usually seek out country music. The 1980 biopic "Coal Miner's Daughter" and her daring and acclaimed 2004 album "Van Lear Rose," produced by alt-rocker Jack White, helped her reach audiences beyond traditional country fans.
The "Coal Miner's Daughter" film was based on her first memoir, and she published a second, titled "Still Woman Enough," in 2002. She has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the Kennedy Center, and she won two Grammy Awards for "Van Lear Rose."
In 1972, she was the first woman named "Entertainer of the Year" by the Country Music Association and in 1980 she was named "Artist of the Decade" for the 1970s by the Academy of Country Music. Lynn was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and is ranked 65th on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll.
