Moscow Ballet brings its 'Nutcracker' to Sarasota, St. Petersburg
Most of the Christmas entertainment that floods theaters, performing arts halls and television screens this time of year comes to an abrupt end on Dec. 25. But if you've still got a hunger for one more holiday classic in the day after Christmas, there's still a show that should sate your craving.
"Moscow Ballet: The Great Russian Nutcracker" has been a holiday favorite all over the United States for almost a quarter-century. It's coming to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota for two shows on Monday, Dec. 28. (You can also catch it at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on Dec. 26.)
"The Great Russian Nutcracker" is essentially the "Nutcracker" you know. It uses the complete score by Tchaikovsky, but makes some changes to the story line in the second act. Instead of visiting the Sugar Plum Fairy, the little girl and the Prince travel to the Land of Peace and Harmony. Emissaries from around the world dance for the couple. The story line has been changed because the Moscow Ballet's mission on its annual Christmas tour is to support international cultural harmony.
Details: Dec. 28, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Show times: 3 and 7 p.m. Tickets: $34.96-$192.25. Information: 941-953-3368, vanwezel.org.
