He's been called "the father of new age music." But there's more to George Winston than the soothing piano sounds he's most often associated with.

In fact, he's recorded albums of Gulf Coast blues music, versions of Vince Guaraldi music from the "Charlie Brown" animated TV specials and even covers of Doors songs.

Still, he's best known for his relaxing piano pieces, especially the season-themed works of his early years on the Windham Hill label, when his albums had such titles as "Autumn," "Winter Into Spring, "December," "Summer" and "All the Seasons." In 1996 he won the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album for "Forest."

Winston's coming to area this weekend, for a Sunday concert at the Palladium in downtown St. Petersburg.

Winston's contemplative New Age piano music is likely to dominate the St. Petersburg concert, but his latest full-length album, which came out in 2013, is titled "Harmonica Solos." It's exactly what the title implies -- a whole disc full of Winston playing unaccompanied harmonica pieces, mostly with a traditional folk flavor to them. The album includes several live recordings, so it's reasonable to assume he'll be performing one or two on Sunday.

Details: 7 p.m. Nov. 22 The Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N., St. Petersburg. Tickets: $22.50, $32.50, $39.50. Information: 727-822-3590, mypalladium.org.
