Kathy Griffin performs in Sarasota
The bio provided by people touting Kathy Griffin's upcoming performance in Sarasota offers a lot of impressive credits: She was on "Suddenly Susan" for four years, she had a recurring role on "Seinfeld," she has supplied voices for "The Simpsons," she's won a couple of Emmy Awards and she was in an Eminem video. (It doesn't mention her very cool cameo in "Pulp Fiction," for some reason.)
But what we all want to see Griffin do, and what is not mentioned in her bio, is what she does so well: She expertly and hilariously trashes A-list Hollywood celebs.
It's a safe bet that you can count on her doing quite a bit of that when she appears in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.
Griffin's so good at making fun of the famous that earlier this year she became the co-host of "Fashion Police," replacing the queen of celebrity insulters, Joan Rivers. She caused a stir in the show biz world when she quit last month after seven episodes, saying that she enjoyed jabbing at celebrities' clothes but didn't like the way the show making fun of imperfect bodies. She asked for and got a huge outpouring of support from Hollywood celebs, including some she has poked fun at in the past.
She's also known as a gay rights activist and a supporter of America's military. But when she's on stage, she's not giving proselytizing. She's just outrageous and funny, with a little dash of mean.
Details: 7 p.m. April 26, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Tickets: $52.62-$84.72. Information: 941-953-3368, vanwezel.org.
