Broadway revue returns to Sarasota

As a musician and composer, Neil Berg has made a name for himself in the New York theater world. He has a solid list of credits, and among the most noteworthy is his role as composer of the 2002 Off-Broadway hit "The Prince and the Pauper."

Around the country, though, he's better known as the driving force behind "Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway," a touring revue that brings Broadway stars to venues around the country to sing some of the greatest hits of American musical theater -- including some they sang on Broadway themselves -- and to share their personal anecdotes and reminiscences about Broadway legends.

Every time he brings the show to a city for the first time, Berg said, he bills it by its original "100 years" title. Then when he returns, he adds a year.

So when the revue comes to Sarasota's Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for the seventh time on Thursday, it will be titled "106 years of Broadway."

It's always been a hit with audiences here, and in fact it almost always sells out. To accommodate demand this year, the people at Van Wezel have added a rare weekday matinee.

Details: Feb. 5, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Show times: 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets: $40-$60. Information: 941-953-3368, vanwezel.org.
