‘The GiGi’s’ comes to Sarasota with a tribute to girl groups

From the 1940s into the 21st century, some of the greatest pop, rock and soul music has come from female artists and “girl groups.”

In the last summer cabaret show of the season, Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota hosts “The GiGi’s,” a touring show that features a three-woman vocal group that celebrates the breadth and depth of that music.

Through songs and comedy (but mostly songs), “The GiGi’s” takes audiences back to the World War II era with a nod to the Andrews Sisters, through the Shirelles, the Supremes and other classic girl groups of the ’60s, into the 1970s and ’80s with hits made famous by such solo artists as Carole King, pop icons Abba, vocal groups such as Wilson Phillips and rock bands such as the Bangles, and into the modern era with numbers from Destiny’s Child, Beyonce and Meghan Trainor.

Among the songs included in the show are “Stop! In The Name of Love,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “Hold On” and “All About That Bass.”

The people at FST promise a show that has something for every musical taste, and one that offer “a beautiful blend of class, style and tight harmonies.”

Details: Aug. 23-Sept. 25, Court Cabaret at Florida Studio Theatre, 1241 N. Palm Ave, Sarasota. $30-$36. 941-366-9000, floridastudiotheatre.org.
