Last summer, area fans of ’80s music were psyched about something called Unity Fest that would bring a lot of the best acts of the era — Howard Jones, Marc Almond, C+C Music Factory and others — together for an outdoor concert on a Pinellas County beach.
A lot went wrong. Parking and the weather (intense heat and heavy rain) were big problems. Jones never got to play and a lot of people left before the headline act, the reunited Culture Club, took to the stage. By all accounts, though Boy George and the band put on a phenomenal show.
They’ll be back in Pinellas on Wednesday, but this time fans will get to enjoy them while under a roof and in air conditioning at the Mahaffey Theater.
All four original members — singer George, drummer Jon Moss, guitarist Roy Hay and bassist Mikey Craig — are playing together again, and seem to be getting along since they reunited two years ago. Given the famous interpersonal dramas of their heyday and their previous unsuccessful attempts to reunite, that’s pretty remarkable.
Band members are unabashedly calling their tour a “nostalgia trip,” so you can expect to hear all the old Culture Club favorites.
