Sarasota’s Florida Studio Theatre celebrates Sammy Cahn
Not everyone knows Sammy Cahn’s name. But everybody knows his songs.
Cahn wrote the lyrics for four Academy Award-winning songs (“Three Coins in a Fountain,” “All the Way,” “High Hopes” and “Call Me Irresponsible”) in a nine-year period. He co-wrote a lot of Frank Sinatra’s biggest hits, including “(Love Is) The Tender Trap,” “My Kind of Town” and “Come Fly With Me.”
That last song lends its title to the latest cabaret show at Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota. “Come Fly With Me! The Sammy Cahn Songbook” opens Wednesday and runs through mid-July.
Even if you know a bit about Cahn, you’ll likely be surprised by the scope of his work, which included hits for the Andrews Sisters (“Bei mir bist du schoen”), Dean Martin (“Ain’t That a Kick in the Head”) and Mario Lanza (“Be My Love”).
The people at Florida Studio Theatre describe “Come Fly With Me!” as “light and breezy,” and they say it’s a “meet-cute story filled with comic antics and revolves around the most memorable Sammy Cahn songs.” Were not sure what a “meet-cute” story is, but any show that’s packed with Cahn songs should be loads of fun.
