State College of Florida seeks women’s uniforms
During the past few years, State College of Florida has staged several art exhibits that focus on clothing as art. One featured costumes created by area theatrical designers and made from recycled materials, and another that looked at wedding dresses and suits from different eras and different ethnic groups around the Bradenton area.
Next in the series is “Art of the Costume: Women in Uniform.” The exhibit will showcase workplace fashions from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries that have influenced current trends. SCF is asking the public to help.
If you have access to any kind of woman’s work uniform century, the college is hoping you’ll submit photos. They’re looking for uniforms from the more obvious professions — military, law enforcement, sports, health care and service industry jobs — plus uniforms from circus performers, mascots and mermaids. Some of the examples they list don’t really fall under the usual definition of “uniform,” so if you’re in doubt about whether they’ll be interested in what you’ve got, go ahead and send a photo.
They need the photos by June 23. If yours is selected, they’ll need you to let them use the uniform from from July 13 through Oct. 28.
To submit photos, visit surveygizmo.com/s3/2771012/Women-in-Uniform-Submission. Upload photos and include your mailing address, phone number, email address and dates of photos, who is wearing the uniform and the approximate value. If you prefer to go old-school, mail your photos to SCF Neel Performing Arts Center, 5840 26th St. W., Bradenton, FL 34207, attn.: Women in Uniform Committee.
An exhibition of work uniforms may not sound especially intriguing, but the previous costume shows have been beautiful and revelatory, addressing broad historical, cultural, artistic and social issues related to customs and fashions. It’ll be free and open to the public.
