He’s known as the King of R&B, and R. Kelly has earned that title, selling more than 40 million albums in a career that has made him one of the most popular artists in music for the past quarter-century.

But anyone who has paid attention knows that Kelly has always been at home in diverse musical genres. He intended his 2015 album “The Buffet” to give his fans a taste of all the musical styles he likes to perform. And since his current national tour is also titled “The Buffet,” fans can expect the same kind of variety from his live appearances.

The tour stops in Tampa on Friday for a show at the Amalie Arena.

Kelly had been in the national eye for a few years, thanks to TV appearances and an album with his group Public Announcement, before his first solo album came out in 1993. “Born Into the ’90s” yielded a couple of hits — “Bump ‘N Grind” and “Your Body’s Callin’.”

Besides selling millions of albums of his own, he’s also written songs for such major artists as Michael Jackson and Aaliyah, and he’s collaborated with Jay Z, Sean Combs and the Notorious B.I.G.

His biggest hit came in 1996 with “I Believe I Can Fly,” from the film “Space Jam.”

“The Buffet” album has already spawned a couple of hits, “Backyard Party” and “Switch Up.”
