Island Players in Anna Maria present ‘Boeing, Boeing’
In 1960, when Marc Camoletti’s “Boeing Boeing” premiered, the Boeing 707 was a revolutionary advancement in air travel.
But it was disastrous for Bernard Lawrence, the fictional playboy at the center of Camoletti’s play. He’s been engaged to three stewardesses, who of course don’t know about each other. Their international flight schedules are such that Bernard can rotate their visits to his Paris apartment. But the 707 makes their flights shorter and their layovers longer. Soon they all end up in Paris at the same time.
“Boeing Boeing” is next up from Island Players on Anna Maria Island. The new production, directed by Kelly Lynn Woodland, opens a two-week run on Thursday.
The English-language version of the play was a hit in 1962, and led to a movie version starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis. But it hadn’t been staged too often in the decades following, until a 2007 London revival renewed interest in it. “Boeing Boeing” returned to Broadway in 2008, in a Tony-winning version that starred Bradley Whitford, Christine Baranski, Mark Rylance, Gina Gershon and Mary McCormack.
The Island Players cast includes Sarah Johnston, Travis Rogers, Judy Glynn, Joseph Mammina , Maricel Cumbo and Jennifer Eddy.
