'Tis the season for venues all over the Bradenton area -- and all over the country, in fact --- to create spooky and scary events with names that end in "ween."

One of the area's favorites over the past six years has been Desoween, the annual one-night celebration of the supernatural at DeSoto National Memorial.

This year's Desoween is scheduled for Saturday night. It's called "Desoween VII: Camp Desoween." It's kind of like an outdoor haunted house. (It's actually billed as a "spooky trail walk") The premise is that campers have run amok in the park, and needless to say something sinister is behind all that amok-running.

It's aimed at kids, but not the really little ones. It's suggested that you leave children under age 7 at home.

You might want to bring younger kids earlier, older kids later, because the Desoween is designed to be scarier and scarier as the night goes on. (It won't even be dark for the first half-hour or so of Desoween, so that might be the time to bring kids who don't want to get too scared.)

Details: 6:30-9 p.m. Oct. 24, DeSoto National Memorial, 8300 DeSoto Memorial Hwy., Bradenton. Admission: Free. Information: 941-792-0458, nps.gov/deso/index.htm.
