Journey's Jonathan Cain Talks Farewell Tour: ‘It's Time for Me to Close the Chapter'

The members of Journey are touring on their Final Frontier Tour, currently set to run through the end of November, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain is speaking out about the band’s retirement. Speaking with the Rock & Roll High School podcast, Cain said that the reason he’s been rocking for so many years is really just because of the fans.

“I think the only reason I’m still out here is the fans, you know?” he said. “It’s time for me to close the chapter. It’s a beautiful time to say goodbye, for me.”

Cain also spoke about Journey’s induction into the Rock Hall back in 2017. At that event, former Journey singer Steve Perry accepted the award with the band but didn’t sing with them, and Cain says he really thought Perry would break down and join them for a song.

“I was certain - I would have bet money he would’ve changed his mind and come and sang ‘Lights’ with us or something, but he didn’t, which was weird,” Cain said on the podcast. “I would have bet money that he was gonna come to soundcheck the day before and show up. I kept looking in the wings and he never came.”

It really does seem like Perry and Journey will never make true amends, but look at what happened with Oasis, so never say never. Perry had previously shot down rumors that he was going to join Journey for their farewell tour, so if you’re holding out hope for one final reunion run, you may be disappointed.

What’s nice is that Cain said during the interview that he’s always said Perry is “welcome on our stage any time,” so it could happen. Cain actually started a rumor a while back that Perry would be with them on tour, so perhaps it was wishful thinking.

Journey is one of the most legendary names in rock music, and it’s sad to see them go, especially still on shaky terms with Perry. But, they’ve been touring for decades and certainly deserve to move on to the next chapter.
