1986 Classic Song Hit No. 1 On This Day 40 Years Ago

On April 19, 1986, 40 years ago, English singer-songwriter George Michael made history as a solo singer when his song "A Different Corner" topped the U.K. Official Singles Chart. With this achievement, the song became the first No. 1 hit in the U.K. for which the same person sang, played the instruments, arranged, wrote, and produced the track.

Four decades after Michael's impressive milestone, his hit song is still remembered as a true classic and one of the late singer's best creations.

When the song dominated the charts in 1986, Michael was already one of the most recognizable voices in pop music as half of Wham!, the duo behind global hits like "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go."

He had also begun stepping into solo success with songs like "Careless Whisper," which topped charts worldwide. "A Different Corner" was Michael's second solo single, and it was definitely a more personal track for him.

In a 1987 interview with Smash Hits magazine, via GM Forever, Michael shared some insight into the song, saying, "That was about a very quick relationship, a here today gone tomorrow one. It's amazing how emotional you can get in a short period of time and how long it can last."

"Someone can really shake you up and it takes you a long time to get yourself back on your feet; that was what that was about," he went on.

Before "A Different Corner," Michael's first solo single, "Careless Whisper," also topped the U.K. Official Singles Chart, solidifying his impressive debut as a soloist after already making his mark as part of Wham!

"A Different Corner" and its similar success was a great sign for Michael's future, especially considering only a few months later, Wham! played their last concert together and officially disbanded.

In the years following, Michael would go on to have many more No. 1 songs, both in the U.K. and around the world, including on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
