1985 Hit by British Pop Rock Band Was Inspired by a Foul-Mouthed Worker
The 1985 Dire Straits hit song "Money for Nothing" may be known for its iconic guitar riff and heavy rhythmic sound-or maybe you really loved the cool (in its time) 3D-animated music video. But don't you ever wonder what (or who) inspired those satirical lyrics? The song makes some pretty big jabs at musicians, particularly the ones participating in '80s MTV music video culture. It's almost like the words came straight from some foul-mouthed, overworked, underpaid worker-and that's precisely where they came from.
Mark Knopfler, lead guitarist and vocalist for Dire Straits, wrote "Money for Nothing" and he's publicly shared the song's origin story. He explains it was 1984, and he was in an New York appliance store, which had a wall of TVs all plugged into MTV. One worker on the floor started completely ripping on what he viewed as a bunch of lazy, overpaid rock stars making easy money on MTV.
Knopfler listened to the guy's critical take and the language he used to describe musicians on MTV and couldn't get enough. So real, so organic, pretty great. Right then, he asked for a pen and paper and started writing down the guys' commentary verbatim, including one offensive slur we're not going to repeat here.
Here's a reminder of the opening lyrics:
"Now look at them yo-yos, that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin', that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Now that ain't workin', that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya, them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb
We got to install microwave ovens, custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators, we got to move these color TVs"
