Born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new musical that’s chock full of Broadway talent will be presented online.

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota is among the U.S. theaters hosting the digital debut of “A Killer Party - A Murder Mystery Musical.”

And at a limited-time price of $12.99 to view, it’s much cheaper than the average theater outing.

The comedic caper was created remotely by a team of dozens of Broadway professionals.

The cast includes two Tony award nominees, Laura Osnes (“Bonnie and Clyde” and “Cinderella”) and Carolee Carmello (“Parade,” “Lestat” and “Scandalous”). They are joined by talents including Michael James Scott (“Aladdin” and “The Book of Mormon”), Alex Newell (“Glee” and “Once on This Island”), Miguel Cervantes (“Hamilton”) and Jessica Keenan Wynn (“Heathers: The Musical” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”).

Described by its creators as a “hilarious and irreverent send-up of the classic murder mystery,” the musical’s quirky plot revolves around the downfall of one Varthur McArthur, artistic director of a failing theater (played by Scott). Detective Justine Case arrives on the scene to figure out which disgruntled member of McArthur’s acting troupe was responsible, and the hijinks unfold from there.

The musical is being released in a piecemeal format — three episodes at a time — to space out the entertainment and let the story’s suspense build.

The first batch of episodes was released on Aug. 5, the second round will come out on Aug. 12 and the final installment will air on Aug. 19.

The purchase of “A Killer Party” includes bonus material and behind-the-scenes footage. A free download of the title track is available online, and an original soundtrack is forthcoming, according to the show’s website.

Part of the proceeds from show sales will benefit Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall when purchased through a special link.
