Goodbye, performing on the road: Elton John announces farewell tour, including Tampa concert

We’ve heard about major artists who go on farewell tours that turn out to be anything but. The artists continue to tour for years afterward.

Here’s one that sounds as though it’s likely to stick.

Elton John, one of the most successful composers and most popular performers of all time, announced Wednesday that he’s launching a three-year farewell tour. He’ll be bringing it to Tampa’s Amalie Arena on Nov. 28.

Sir Elton will be 74 when the tour concludes, and he said he plans to devote his time to raising his two sons. The older of the two is now 7.

The tour is called “Farewell Yellow Brick Road,” and it starts Sept. 8. It will eventually travel to five continents with more than 300 concerts.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Feb. 2. They’ll cost $55.75, $145.75 and $245.75, plus services charges.

American Express card holders can buy tickets in advance beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday. A limited number of VIP packages will also be available starting at 10 a.m. Thursday. The packages include premium tickets, on-stage photo opportunities at John’s piano, backstage tours, limited-edition lithographs and custom merchandise.

John has been releasing albums since the late 1960s, and has written music for several major Broadway hits, including “The Lion King,” “Aida” and “Billy Elliot.” he has won Academy Awards, a Grammy Award and five Grammy Awards.
