Around the country, people thought that the demise of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus meant the end of the circus, period.

We in the Manatee-Sarasota are know better, and if you have friends visiting from out of town for the holidays there’s a great way to show them that the circus is alive and well, with a bright future ahead.

The Sailor Circus is Sarasota will stage its annual Christmas show in eight performances beginning Wednesday. (That’s Dec. 27, so it’s a little bit after Christmas, but it’s still in the middle of the holidays season.)

The show’s called “The High-Flying Holidays” and it features 100 young circus performers, between ages 8 and 18. They’re students, but they study with some of the best professional in the business. The older ones have been studying for many years and they will be traveling with the world’s best circuses very soon.

Sailor Circus shows are just as colorful and extravagant as the professional circuses you’ve seen. The stunts are just as thrilling and the littlest performers are really cute and do amazing work. You and your out-of-town guests can see the next generation of circus stars, and have a great time doing it.

Details: 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 27-30, Sailor Circus, 2075 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota. $15-$20. 941-355-9805, circusarts.org.
