“American Idol” has spawned a handful of major stars, along with countless acts that faded quickly into oblivion.

One of the stars that has shown true staying power is Chris Daughtry. He’ll be making his Sarasota debut in March when his eponymous band comes to Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

Daughtry was a solo artist when he appeared on the fifth season of “American Idol.” He wasn’t the winner (Taylor Hicks was the male winner, Katharine McPhee the female winner) but his band’s first album became one of the best-selling debuts in history. Daughtry (the band) has now sold more than 8.2-million albums, garnered four Grammy Award nominations and created the No. 1 single “It’s Not Over.”

The Van Wezel concert is set for March 8. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. They run you $31-$86. Call or go to 941-953-3368, vanwezel.org.
