Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran performs at Amalie Arena
Ed Sheeran, the ginger-haired, potato-faced purveyor of tender and tuneful love songs, will perform on Tuesday in Tampa.
He’ll be at Amalie Arena, with another sensitive British singer-songwriter, James Blunt, opening.
Sheeran became an immediate sensation when he burst into the mainstream in 2011 with his first album. Since then, he’s been nominated for 11 Grammy Awards and sold 22 million albums. He songs have been streamed on Spotify 4.7 billion times.
He titles his albums with mathematical symbols. So far, they include the symbols for “Plus,” “Multiply” and “Divide.” The latest came out in March and it’s his biggest popular success so far. “Divide” went to the top of the iTunes charts in 96 countries, including the United States, and achieved the most one-day streams for a single artist (68,695,172) and the most one-day streams for an individual album (56,727,861), almost doubling the previous record. The album’s lead single, “Shape of You,” posted numbers as impressive as the album’s.
Blunt is something of a one-hit wonder in the United States, thanks his chart-dominating single “You’re Beautful” in 2004. He has remained popular in the U.K. and around the world ever since, but not as much in this country as in others.
