Few artists have had as varied a career, within the confines of contemporary music, as John Mayer. He’s moved from folksy, acoustic music into more blues-based material, then into jazz and ’70s-style California pop-rock and into collaborations with Taylor Swift and with members of the Grateful Dead.

His latest album, which came out earlier this year, is titled “The Search for Everything,” and his current tour gets its name from that album. It’s coming to Amalie Arena in Tampa on Sunday.

The show promises to be true to the musically peripatetic nature of Mayer’s career. He’ll perform solo acoustic numbers, and he’ll also perform with the John Mayer Trio and with a full band. You’ll probably hear some tracks from the new album, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The opening act on the tour is a Boston-area band called The Night Game, whose first single is titled “The Outfield.” (From the name of the band and the single, it’s reasonable to assume the band members really like baseball.) The single has a retro-pop feel, kind of like Phil Collins’ hits. The Night Game’s front man is Martin Johnson, who also fronts the pop-rock band Boys Like Girls.
