The Isley Brothers bringing decade of soulful hits to the Mahaffey

They’ve created some of the most iconic songs in rock and soul history, including “Shout,” “Twist and Shout” and “This Old Heart of Mine.” Their songs have been covered by everyone from Garth Brooks to the Beatles. Jimi Hendrix was their guitarist for a while.

And after more than 60 years, the Isley Brothers are still going strong. They’ll be at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

Considering that they’ve always been a family group, the Isleys have had a remarkably fluid lineup, as others (and one brother-in-law) joined, left and re-joined over the years.

These days there are only two officials members of the group, Ronald Isley — who has been a member since the very beginning, in 1954, when the Isley brothers were a gospel group — and Ernie Isley, who has been a member since 1973. (He left the Isley Brothers for a spell in the ’80s when he co-founded the splinter group Isley-Jasper-Isley).

You’re bound to hear lots of hitt from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, but this isn’t likely to be an oldies show. The Isley Brothers are still making vibrant new music, and they recently teamed up with Carlos Santana for an album called “Power of Peace” that came out July 28. The album, which is mostly covers of songs by such artists as Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, has already drawn glowing reviews.
