Disney has released more information about Pandora – The World of Avatar, including the story of the bridge that will connect Pandora to the rest of the park. The new land is scheduled to open next summer at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando.
The construction update came over the weekend during D23’s Destination D: Amazing Adventures presentation, by Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. The storyline is that the bridge was built by a destructive company long ago, and that nature is now breaking down evidence of the company’s presence.
Theme Park Insider reported “the conceit is that visitors are traveling with Alpha Centauri Expeditions to the planet of Pandora, located 4.4 light years from Earth.” The bridge will serve as an entry into the Alpha Centauri base camp.

Chapek said scaffolding had just been removed from the bridge.
Disney had previously announced two main attractions, in Pandora, based on James Cameron’s Avatar movies: a Soarin’-style ride on a banshee and the Na’vi River Journey along a sacred river in a bioluminescent rainforest. The river journey will end in an encounter with a Na’vi shaman.
Chapek also announced Pandora’s retail and food and drink establishments: Satu’li Canteen, the land’s main dining establishment, which also will have Na’vi art and cultural items; Windtraders, a shop selling Na’vi cultural items, toys, science kits, and more; and the Pongu Pongu, a drink location.
