Bradenton City Council OKs borrowing $7.5M for McKechnie Field improvements

BRADENTON -- The Bradenton City Council on Wednesday agreed to take out a $7.5 million loan to pay for improvements of Mckechnie Field.

The money will be used solely to continue improvements of the field in hopes of making the venue attractive for year-round events, officials said.

Manatee County will provide $400,000 in tourist “bed taxes” annually to pay off the loan, said Carl Callahan, city clerk and treasurer.

Callahan said the city expects to close the deal with Bank of America by the end of February.

The work is scheduled to start after the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training this year.
