P.J. Forbes to manage Marauders

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Friday that P.J. Forbes will manage the Bradenton Marauders, the organization’s high Single-A affiliate that will compete in the Florida State League beginning in April.

This is the second year in the organization for Forbes, who managed the Pirates’ Single-A affiliate, the Lynchburg Hillcats, to the Carolina League title last year.

SAINT STEPHEN’S 10, ADMIRAL FARRAGUT 4 — The Falcons (6-3-2) rolled into the holiday break, getting four goals and three assists from Matthew Unzicker.

Conner McCullen tallied three goals and three assists, Chris Scott had twoo goals and two assists, and seventh-grader Toby Howell scored a goal in his varsity debut.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 3, SOUTHEAST 0 — Sam Severson scored two goals to lead the visiting Mustangs (9-0-3).

Billy Loumbarti also scored for Ranch, Alex Martin and Aaron McKaney each had an assist.

Prep boys basketball

BAYSHORE 50, DIXIE HOLLINS 30 — The Bruins (1-7, 1-1 Class 4A-District 10) earned their first victory since the 2007-08 season thanks to 26 points from Javaris Jackson.

BCS 88, BAYSHORE CHRISTIAN 60 — Brian Cobb had 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Panthers (9-0, 5-0 Class 1A-District 8).

The other four BCS starters — Jonathan Negrin, Jordan Negrin, Mike Frey and Daniel Magley — each scored 16 points.

SAINT STEPHEN’S 41, FORT MYERS CANTERBURY 36 — Casey Cothron scored 19 points to lead the visiting Falcons, who moved to 4-3.

Saint Stephen’s led 37-36 late in the game before Cothron’s two free throws and a bucket by Josh Cothron allowed the Falcons to pull away.

EDISON ACADEMIC 78, WEST FLORIDA CHRISTIAN 38 — P.J. Engram had 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Eagles (8-4).

Zech Kendall and Chris Gorski also had 16 points.

Prep girls basketball

SOUTHEAST 42, DESOTO 31 — Bianca Hanna scored 23 points, and the host Seminoles (12-1) won their 11th straight game.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 61, OSCEOLA 51 — Tiffany Waters scored 19 points for the Mustangs (6-3, 2-0 in Class 4A-District 10), followed by Gabriella Diaz-Granados (13), Loni Shamble (11) and Breanna Lindsay (11).

BAYSHORE 55, DIXIE HOLLINS 14 — The Bruins (6-5, 2-0 4A-10) shut out their opponents 19-0 in the second half.

Elissa Alvarez scored 21 points, and Yasmeen Pinkney-Howard had 18.

FORT MYERS CANTERBURY 46, SAINT STEPHEN’S 13 — Jenny Boothby scored 11 points, and Maggie Holbert had six steals for the visiting Falcons (0-8).

Prep wrestling

SOUTHSIDE DUALS — Lakewood Ranch was 3-0 at Gulfport Boca Ciega, including a 54-25 win over Southeast.

Four Mustangs — Michael Clark (145 pounds), Donell Reed (152), William Clark (160) and Dontray Belvin (215) — were 3-0 on the first day of the two-day event.

Arden Pabst made his season debut in a big way on Friday night, as the Marauders catcher stroked four singles and walked once for a perfect five times on base in five trips during the win.

Bradenton's offensive attack showed a stout improvement in Game 2 of the season as well, accounting for 12 hits with four of them being for extra bases.
