To his credit: Kavious Price anchored the Hurricanes' Class 4A state-champion 400-meter relay team and, despite being the only junior in a foursome otherwise made up of seniors, he was the clear leader of the group. Price also finished fifth in the state in the 100 dash and seventh in the 200 and won both the district and region titles in the 100.
The Canes will have to replace Jarquevis Laughlin, Kelvin McKnight and Sam Vrinios for next season, but with Price returning Manatee hopes to contend again. Price and head coach Mike Smith didn't wait long after the season ended to start thinking about next season.
"After we won states, we went right to thinking about next year coming up," Price said. "Right now, we're looking forward to some other guys stepping up."
Fast fact: Price, along with the other three members of the relay, was a major contributor on the Canes football team last season as a wide receiver. Football makes up the bulk of his athletic background, and he has been teammates with Laughlin and McKnight since childhood.
Up next: Price will be back for his senior year at Manatee, where he's expected to be one of the top wideouts on the football team, contend for a state championship in the 100 and anchor a new-look 400 relay.
