Herald All-Area | Girls weightlifting, Sierra Sanders, Bayshore

To her credit: Sanders advanced to the state meet in Kissimmee for the first time this season. She and Palmetto sophomore Sha'la McMillan finished just out of medal contention by placing seventh with a total lift of 400 pounds in the unlimited weight class. Sanders lifted 225 pounds on the bench press and 175 in the clean and jerk at state. At the District 8 meet at Punta Gorda Charlotte, Sanders placed second with a total lift of 390 pounds. She likes weightlifting because of the competition and the rush she gets from it.

Fast facts: Sanders is part of an accomplished family of athletes that includes current NFL player Ace Sanders, a cousin, and former NFL players Tracy Sanders and Adrian McPherson. Another cousin, Nigel Spikes, played basketball at Marshall University. Sierra Sanders is a member of the National Honor Society and a math honors student. She is undecided on a college but is finding that not many schools have women's weightlifting. In her precious little spare time, she likes to go to the movies and hang out with friends.

Up next: Sanders plans to attend college and major in physical therapy. She wants to be a plastic surgeon someday.
